What is a Varicocele?
A varicocele is an abnormal enlargement of veins around the testicle. It is similar to varicose veins that occur in the legs.
These veins, when the valves inside stop working efficiently, allow blood to flow backwards and pool around the testicle instead of returning to the heart. This pooling of used blood around the testis creates a congested environment and causes symptoms.
Varicoceles are common and often occur on the left side, although some men may have bilateral disease. Not every varicocele requires treatment. However, treatment may be considered when symptoms, fertility concerns, or progressive enlargement occur.

When We Do NOT Recommend Varicocele Treatment
One of the most common misconceptions is that every varicocele needs treatment. In many patients, observation alone may be appropriate.
